Creation and concept

Android xiii concept arts

Android 13 and his comrades were designed by Akira Toriyama, the original manga author, for Toei'southward theatrical production.[i]

Appearance

Android xiii as he appears in the movie

In his standard form, he appears as a muscular human with green-blue eyes and long white hair. He wears a yellowish-chocolate-brown vest adorning the Red Ribbon Ground forces logo on his left side, besides as tiny grayness suspenders worn underneath his vest, dark green trousers, dark greyness boots with black tips, chocolate-brown gloves, as well every bit a gray and yellow baseball game cap with the Red Ribbon Army logo on its forepart (he is the simply one of Dr. Gero's Android models to wear a hat without having a glass-domed attic).

When transforming, his belong ended upwards completely destroyed, while his suspenders were destroyed to the extent that what remained of them hung loosely from his trousers. When he's fully transformed, his muscles bulk up, and his skin turns blue with greyness areas on his shoulders, stomach, chest, and back. His pupils and irises likewise vanish, and his scleras turn yellowish. Also his hair changes to look exactly like Vegeta'due south Super Saiyan hair, except it's orangish in color.

Personality

"Gratuitous will. Deplorable humans! War, segregation, hatred! Is that what you've washed with your gratis will, boy? Don't you lecture me with your xxx dollar haircut! Goku dies!"
— Android 13 to Hereafter Trunks

Being a man-fabricated android and serving only as a lackey to target and impale Goku, Android thirteen seems to display piffling-to-no emotion. His face seems to always display a diabolical smiling. In the original version, he is dead-set on this goal although he seems to be laid-back nigh approaching it, saying that anyone who gets in his mode will die as well.

In the Funimation dub, his attitude is essentially that of a stereotypical "redneck" (which his grapheme pattern as well appears to have been modeled after), with Future Trunks even referring to him as a Red Ribbon Redneck at one point. Android xiii makes references to Native Americans when noting that if Goku couldn't even handle the "Indians" (referring to Androids fourteen and xv), there'southward no demand to bring out the chief in reference to himself (who shared a rivalry with cowboys in the Old West) and fifty-fifty yells "Yeehah!" during battle. When using the S.S. Deadly Bomber, he also makes a cursory reference to heat stroke when Goku attempts to cake the assail by noting that Goku had been "out in the sunday without his hat on for way too long." Also in the dub, he scarcely refers to Goku by name, preferring instead to call him by such titles as "metropolis boy," "son" or "boy". In fact, he only refers to Goku by proper name three times: the first time when he is first activated, the 2nd when stating that he will become through with his mission to kill Goku to Future Trunks, and the tertiary merely before his destruction. Owing to the footing of his attitude in the dub, he speaks with an extremely thick Mason-Dixie accent.

Android 13'due south about unchanging and unpredictable grin

In addition, Funimation'due south dub provides a further glimpse into Android thirteen'south psyche when he lectures Future Trunks about how people have misused their free-will to create more than sufferings like war, segregation and hatred (even though he uses this lecture to justify the pursuit of his own morally questionable goal of killing Goku). In the uncut version of the dub, he is also shown to be somewhat fibroid regarding his opponents, such as commenting upon inflow that Goku was "catching an ass-whoopin'" from Androids 14 and 15, besides every bit declaring he intends to do what he was programmed to practise, which is to "kill [Goku's] ass". Also in the Funimation dub, Dr. Gero's computer directly relays information to him, which is something only subtly hinted at in the original Japanese dub of the moving picture (the calculator does not actually say anything in the original version).

The English localization for his diverse video game appearances merged the personalities from the two versions of the motion picture, as he retains his Bricklayer-Dixie accent, yet exudes a more no-nonsense demeanor regarding his programmed mission to kill Goku similar to that of the Japanese version.

In his Super form, he is shown to exist a lot more assertive and maniacal (in the Japanese dub, he does not speak at all aside from yelling Goku'south name upon his death. This is retained in later video game appearances where he is reduced to giving feral roars, with the few lines of dialogue he gives existence shouted out), and, in the case of the uncut dub, was also prone to cursing when irritated at 1'southward persistence, as evidenced past his yelling "Damn you!" when Goku tried to get up. He is a much more frenzied and barbarous grapheme in this form also, as he punches Goku in the crotch (Japanese and uncut dubs only), almost breaks Vegeta's back, grabs and blasts Trunks's skull and steps on Piccolo's face while charging his ki. He also doesn't permit others to fully charge their attacks like Omega Shenron. Despite his mania in this form, he was nevertheless shown to retain a degree of intelligence, as he made an try to set on Goku equally shortly every bit he saw him charge upwards the Spirit Bomb (with the English language dub fifty-fifty having him claim to know nigh Goku's Spirit Bomb and vow to non allow him to use information technology earlier doing and so).

Although fully defended to his programmed duty of assassinating Goku, he is not above turning against Dr. Gero if he got in the fashion of his objective, which tin be implied past a special interaction between Android xiii and Dr. Gero if paired up in a match. Similarly, he also considers himself an "elderberry" to Android 17 and eighteen, presumably due to having predated their creation, as he retorts that they should "listen their elders" when they make a rude remark towards him. Certain dialogue when paired up against Androids 14 and/or xv also imply he's perfectly willing to plow against and kill his comrades if he wished to ascend to his ultimate form.

Biography

He was developed by Dr. Gero at some betoken earlier the Androids Saga. Along with Android 14 and Android 15, Android 13 was quite close to the final Android form; however, like their predecessors they had i problem or another and as such were destroyed by Dr. Gero.

Even though Android 13, Android fourteen, and Android 15 are not featured in the Dragon Brawl manga, the "Androids A-B-C'south" section mentions that Androids 13, xiv, and 15 were very close to the Android concept,[5] beingness nearly perfect.[six]

Super Android 13!

Master commodity: Dragon Ball Z: Super Android 13!

Android 13

Android xiii is completed by Dr. Gero'southward self-aware supercomputer after Android fourteen and Android 15, who by this time are already taking up arms against Goku and Future Trunks. Upon his arrival on the Glacier, thirteen confronts Goku, leaving Futurity Trunks and Vegeta to fight against 14 and 15 respectively. During his fight with Goku, he has the utmost confidence he will surely win the battle and seems to have a slight border over him. Goku and so transforms into a Super Saiyan in hopes to turn the tables, but thirteen is still able to fight on par with him if non still having the edge. Shortly after which Piccolo intervenes to help Goku. Ultimately, 14 and 15 are defeated, following Future Trunks and Vegeta's transformations into Super Saiyans; their deaths are fail-rubber, even so, every bit xiii absorbs components from both, resulting in his transformation into Super Android xiii.

Super Android 13 easily withstands Piccolo'southward assault

Vegeta is the get-go to attack the newly transformed 13, only to quickly be brought to his knees by his astonishing new forcefulness. Goku, Future Trunks, and Piccolo's attempts are also foiled with little effort on xiii's part. Becoming desperate to kill 13, Goku is forced to prepare his ultimate weapon, the Spirit Bomb, while Krillin, Vegeta, Gohan and Future Trunks distract 13. Super Android 13 easily dispatches them (in the Funimation dub, he informs Goku that he knows near his Spirit Bomb technique). He begins charging upward his S.S. Mortiferous Bomber when Piccolo charges at 13 and puts him in a Full Nelson. Super Android thirteen quickly counters it and begins burdensome Piccolo'south head, but he stops short when he notices Goku's Spirit Bomb charging.

Super Android 13 is killed

When Goku transforms into his Super Saiyan class, his torso absorbs the Spirit Flop's immense free energy and erases the surrounding ice until the state 13 is standing on is nothing more than than a atypical colonnade. When 13 tries to attack Goku, his arms end up incinerated by the raw energy emitted from Goku and the Spirit Bomb. Afterward, one dial from Goku disintegrates 13, with help from the ki Goku emits (in the edited dub, Goku only kicks Super Android xiii abroad before the latter is destroyed, due to the punch impaling the android'south stomach being cut out). 13 dies while yelling Goku's proper name (in FUNimation's dub, he curses that Goku must die). Consequentially at the same moment, Gero's supercomputer shuts down.

Ability

Films

In his standard grade, Android 13 is able to go along up with Goku even as a Super Saiyan. While in this base of operations form, he does not seem to be as stiff as Android 17 and Android 18, who are able to keep up with and even surpass a Super Saiyan's power. In the Japanese version, Android 13 states that his strongest attack in base class - the S.S. Deadly Bomber - has plenty power to blow up half of planet Globe.

Afterward arresting the components of Android 14 and Android xv, Android 13 is given an enormous power boost. Coupled with his new advent, 13's ability skyrockets ferociously. Despite being attacked past Piccolo (who has fused with Kami at this signal), Goku, Vegeta and Futurity Trunks (the latter iii in their Super Saiyan transformations) Super Android 13 is admittedly unfazed. Thanks to being made out of adamantine, his torso also becomes so tough that Future Trunks' sword shatters upon hitting his arm. It is merely when Goku forms a Spirit Bomb and absorbs information technology as a Super Saiyan that any damage is done to Super Android 13 at all; and he is defeated in a unmarried punch (in the edited dub, yet, Goku merely kicks him away with the titanic android reeling back due to the punch being cut out).[ane]

Statements by authors and guidebooks

It was stated past Takao Koyama, that when making Dragon Ball movies was that the next movie villain that Goku fought would e'er have to be at least stronger than the previous villain Goku fought. Thus, Android 13 was stronger than Meta-Cooler but weaker than Broly.

Video Games

According to Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, Future Gohan states that he is stronger than Future Androids 17 & eighteen.[7]

During the Tournament of Time, Androids thirteen, 14 and fifteen are upgraded past Dr. Gero's Supercomputer in Age 780 and get much more powerful. Afterward condign Super Android thirteen he is able to initially overpower Cabba, Caulifla, Teen Gohan and Shallot in their Super Saiyan 2 forms, beating Cabba and Caulifla in one hit each. Fifty-fifty after using and using dark ki all the same he is defeated when Shallot turns Super Saiyan 3 and Bardock joins the other Saiyans on fighting him.

In the FUNimation dub, Android 13 likewise implies that he knows enough about the Spirit Bomb technique (presumably due to Dr. Gero's data on the technique) to be able to counter it. Still, though he may have been prepared to counter a normal Spirit Bomb he was unable to counter a Spirit Bomb-enhanced Super Saiyan Goku (presumably because Dr. Gero's computer had no data on it).

Trivia

  • The number xiii is considered unlucky in many traditions, something Android 13 even referenced in the FUNimation dub.
  • Android 13'southward way of dressing resembles that of an American truck driver.
  • Android thirteen is the merely grapheme to harbor two Red Ribbon insignias (one on his cap and some other on his belong), as all other androids take but one.
  • During his fight with Goku, there is a moment where Super Android 13 punches him in the crotch, forcing him out of the Super Saiyan state as well equally severely impacting his speed and reaction fourth dimension to such an extent that he was barely able to endeavor to dodge one of Super Android xiii'southward attacks before being placed in a headgrip. This was edited out with a flash of calorie-free in televised English dubs.
  • In the Polish version dubs, Goku says that Super Android 13 has a hairdo similar to that of Super Saiyans.
  • Similar to Android 19, Android 13, Android 14, and Android 15 are among the few Androids completely dedicated to Dr. Gero's vendetta against Goku as Android 17, and Android xviii, and Cell were not as focused on killing Goku as the others (Android 17 and 18 eventually lost interest in killing Goku entirely afterwards the Cell Games and though Jail cell ended up successfully killing Goku, it succeeded partially due Goku sacrificing himself to save the Globe) and despite his cold mental attitude towards Goku, Android 16 ultimately choose to side with Goku and Gohan confronting Jail cell to protect the Earth (Android xx doesn't actually apply every bit he is basically Dr. Gero himself).
  • In the remastered version of the film, the vox of his Super form sounds the same as his kickoff form (albeit gruffer in tone).
  • Android xiii's frequent reference to Goku as "Metropolis Boy" in the dub is ironic, as Goku largely grew upwardly in the wilderness and even during adulthood tended to live off the land.
  • He is the first Cerise Ribbon Android model with the ability to absorb other Androids (via absorption of their components) to achieve a more powerful form, as he predates the Bio-Androids Cell and Android 21 (Evil), also as the Machine Mutant Android fusion Super 17 who tin also transform through absorption in Dragon Ball Heroes.
  • Fifty-fifty though Android 13 is a purely synthetic android, he is depicted equally fighting Goku underwater with footling to no hindrance, even deliberately dragging Goku underwater beforehand, implying that his circuits were waterproof.
    • This is not surprising equally he is modelled after Man-type Earthling, the Dragon Globe equivalent to real world humans which are actually composed of water. Additionally water is ane of the most common substances on Globe, this information technology makes perfect sense that Dr. Gero and/or his figurer would construct synthetic Androids that wouldn't short circuit when exposed to such a commonplace element.
    • In the Funimation dub, Android 13 refers to himself as a cyborg (presumably a error made by the localization team who may have causeless he was the same type of "Android" as Android 17 and Android eighteen).
  • Android 13 in the English language version of various video games has a slightly higher pitch in his voice than in the movie.
